What EDD-FPX8040 actually grades
Alignment is the criterion behind most of the others, and it is mechanical enough to check. On the qualitative side the vocabulary changes but the obligation does not. Yvonna Lincoln and Egon Guba proposed credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability in Naturalistic Inquiry in 1985 as the parallel criteria, and each is earned by a procedure: prolonged engagement and member checking for the first, thick description for the second, an audit trail for the third and fourth. Write the procedure, not the adjective.
Ethics and approvals form the fourth strand, and practitioner research raises problems a campus study does not. The Belmont Report set out respect for persons, beneficence and justice in 1979, and the federal regulations that implement those principles govern what counts as human subjects research. In your own building the pressure point is voluntariness, because a teacher invited to participate by an administrator who evaluates them is not in the same position as a stranger answering a survey. Student records carry their own federal protections, and using data for research is a different act from using it to do your job. How to actually write EDD-FPX8040: where to begin
Draft the alignment table before the narrative, and let the prose follow it. One row per research question, one column each for the data source, the participants, the analysis and the claim that row will support. Anything that cannot fill all five cells is not yet a research question. Then convert each criterion in the guide into a heading and place the top descriptor underneath it while you write. The assessments in this course usually ask you to specify a study that would investigate a problem in your own organization, to justify the design against alternatives, and to account for the quality and ethics of what you propose, and your scoring guide decides how much of each and in what order.
Then write one worked design end to end so the logic is visible. An elementary principal wants to know whether a new small-group reading block is working, with 41 percent of second graders below benchmark at the winter check. The purpose sentence, in the conventional form, reads that the purpose of this convergent mixed methods study is to examine the association between participation in the small-group reading block and spring benchmark performance among second graders at one elementary school, and to describe how teachers decide which students enter the block. The first question is comparative and quantitative, the second is descriptive and qualitative, and the two are integrated at interpretation rather than merged in the middle. Now state the entitlement plainly: because students were placed in the block by staff rather than at random, this design supports a claim about association adjusted for prior score and does not support a claim that the block caused anything.
Then go threat by threat, because that section is where the top column is usually won. Selection is the obvious one, since the students placed in the block were chosen for being furthest behind, and regression toward the mean alone will make that group appear to grow whether or not the block does anything. The remedy is a comparison group matched on the winter score, drawn from a prior cohort or from a sister school, or a discontinuity comparison around the cut score used for placement. History threatens the study if a new phonics curriculum arrived the same year, and the answer is to say so rather than to hide it. Instrumentation threatens it if the benchmark form or the cut score changed between administrations, which happens more often than people check. Attrition threatens it if the students who leave are the lowest scorers, since the average will rise by subtraction. Name each one, say what you did about it, and say what remains uncontrolled, and pair that section with the measurement care described in EDD-FPX8050.

Developing the synthesis
The literature review inside a design paper has a different job from the one in a problem paper, and confusing the two costs a criterion. Here you are reviewing methods, not findings. Ask what designs other people have used on a problem like yours, what each of those designs was able to conclude, and what it could not. If most published work on your topic is cross-sectional survey research, the field has plenty of description and little evidence about change, and that is an argument for the design you are proposing. If the strongest studies used a comparison group and yours cannot, say what you will lose and what you will still be able to claim. Instrument selection belongs in this synthesis too, since choosing a published measure means adopting the population it was validated in and the reliability it demonstrated there. Write the review so that a reader reaches your design section already expecting it.
Citations that survive faculty review
Methodological claims require methodological sources, and this is where students most often cite a course page instead of a book. Design behaviour, threat catalogues and analysis choices come from standard texts, which means Shadish, Cook and Campbell for causal inference from imperfect comparisons, Lincoln and Guba for trustworthiness, Yin for case study logic, Glaser and Strauss for grounded theory, and Creswell and Plano Clark for mixed methods typologies. Regulatory obligations come from primary documents, principally the Belmont Report and the federal human subjects regulations, alongside your own institution's review policy and your district's research procedure, cited as the documents they are. Empirical education research supporting the substance of the problem belongs in journals located through ERIC and Education Source, and evidence standards from the Institute of Education Sciences are worth citing when you argue about the strength of a design. Format in the seventh edition of the APA manual, and check that no design decision in your paper rests on a source that only mentions the technique in passing.
The mistakes that land Basic instead of Distinguished
- A question the planned data cannot answer. Asking how teachers experience a policy and then collecting a rating scale breaks the alignment criterion outright.
- Causal language over a non-randomized comparison. Improved and produced are claims your placement procedure has already forfeited.
- Trustworthiness listed rather than earned. Naming credibility without describing a member check or a triangulation procedure scores as an assertion.
- A design nobody could execute. Three hundred classroom observations across a district in one semester is not ambition, it is a plan that ends in an incomplete.
- Approvals treated as paperwork. A timeline that ignores district research review and the university board is usually wrong by a full term.

Do I need approval to study my own school?
Usually two approvals, and they are separate things. Your university review board decides whether the activity counts as human subjects research and whether your protections are adequate, and that determination is theirs to make rather than yours to assume. Your district almost always runs its own research review, with its own forms, its own calendar and often a required sponsor inside the organization, and district approval does not substitute for university approval or the reverse. Records held about students carry federal protections separately, so pulling a roster or a set of scores for research is not the same as using them to do your job. Ask both offices before you collect anything, and build their timelines into your plan, because they are frequently the longest item in it.
Can a study with no comparison group say anything?
It can say a great deal, provided you keep the verbs honest. Without a comparison you can describe what happened, document how a practice was implemented, capture how participants understood it, and establish a baseline that later work can build on. What you cannot do is attribute the change to your intervention, because maturation, the ordinary progress of a school year, a concurrent initiative, and regression from an unusually low starting point will all produce movement on their own. Two cheap improvements are available. Take more than two measurements, since a series before and after shows whether a line simply continued. Or find a group that did not receive the change and was similar at baseline, even an earlier cohort, and report the difference between their trajectories.
How many interviews are enough?
Enough to answer the question you asked, which is a matter of design rather than a number you can look up. Sample size in qualitative work depends on how narrow the question is, how varied the people who could answer it are, and how much each participant can tell you. A tightly scoped question about how eight teachers in one department read a new grading policy may be answered well by those eight. A question about how families across a district experience enrollment will not be answered by twelve interviews from one neighborhood. Say what your logic was, state when you stopped hearing new categories and how you knew, and treat the moment where a new participant only confirms existing ones as evidence rather than as convenience.
