Physiological plausibility is not evidence of effect, and saying so is worth writing down. Many mechanisms that should work do not survive a controlled test, which is the reason the control condition, rather than the biology, is usually where a brief like this turns.

Write the claim being made in the words of whoever is making it
Quote the promise, then restate it as a testable proposition with a population and an outcome. Marketing language collapses several claims into one, and separating them is half the analysis: a device may plausibly change a signal, change a mental state, or change a result, and those need different evidence.

Describe the instrument by what it physically records
Electroencephalography records voltage changes at the scalp produced by summed postsynaptic activity, with resolution measured in milliseconds and poor localization, which is the mirror image of what functional imaging offers. Say that plainly and half of the overclaiming becomes impossible.

Ask what the comparison group received
For any training or feedback protocol, the question that decides the answer is whether anyone tested it against a condition identical in every respect except the feedback itself. Check the sample sizes and the direction of the reporting

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished
- Plausibility treated as proof. A mechanism that sounds right is a reason to run a trial, not a reason to believe a result.
- A recording described as reading the mind. Voltage at the scalp is voltage at the scalp, and the gap between that and a mental state is the whole argument.
- Vendor studies accepted as the literature. Evidence chosen by the party selling the product is a sample with a known bias, and saying so is part of the appraisal.
- No question asked about the control condition. Without knowing what the comparison group did, nothing in the results section can be attributed to the product.
- A verdict where a decision was needed. Concluding that the evidence is mixed leaves the reader exactly where they started, and briefs are graded on being useful.
