The PSY-FPX6840 Assessment 2 method, step by step

  1. Write the claim as a policy sentence with a boundary in it

    Vague claims cannot be argued and sweeping ones cannot be defended. Youth sport bodies should cap single-sport training at a stated number of hours a week for athletes under 14 is arguable, bounded and checkable, which is the shape the criteria are built for.

  2. Build the other side from its own literature first

    Draft the opposing case before your own, from sources whose authors hold it, and stop when you can state it in a paragraph an advocate would accept. Doing this first is the trick; written afterwards, an opposing case always arrives shaped for defeat.

  3. Report each study's design in the sentence that reports its result

    Much of the specialization evidence is case-control or retrospective cohort work in clinic populations, where the exposure was recalled after the injury. Say that where you use it, because recall bias runs in a known direction and naming it is appraisal rather than hedging.

  4. Read the effect size, then read its interval

    An odds ratio tells you the direction and rough magnitude of an association in that sample; its confidence interval tells you how precisely it was estimated. Report both, and never convert either into a threshold for an individual young athlete, since a population association does not license a personal forecast.

  5. Say plainly what a p value cannot do

    A p value below a conventional cut says the data would be unusual if the null were true in that sample. It does not give the probability that the hypothesis is right, it does not measure how big the effect is, and it does not promise the finding will replicate. One sentence to that effect, used at the right moment, does more for the appraisal criterion than a page of summary.

  6. Recommend on stated grounds, then self-score

    Separate the empirical grounds, the ethical grounds and the practical ones, and say which would have to fail for you to abandon the recommendation. Then grade every criterion yourself and rewrite anything short of the top level before you submit.

The strongest source in my appraisal table is a case-control study of young athletes presenting at sports medicine clinics, in which those with an overuse diagnosis more often reported year-round training in a single sport, at an odds ratio of 1.8 with a 95 percent confidence interval from 1.2 to 2.7.1 The exposure was recalled after the injury had happened and the comparison group came from the same clinics, so the estimate is vulnerable to differential recall and to a sample of young athletes who all had a reason to attend a clinic.2 Read at its proper strength, that interval says the association is unlikely to be an accident of sampling in this population and says nothing about how many hours are too many for any individual 13 year old, which is precisely the number a policy has to choose and the literature has not supplied.3

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished
