How MAT-FPX2001 Assessment 3 is scored
There is no total and no percentage. Each row on the guide receives one of four levels, and what each level says is what your section has to do:

Statistics evaluators check the verb before they check the arithmetic. Two things measured at the same moment cannot carry caused, produced, or led to, and the honest verbs are moved with, was associated with, and predicted. One wrong verb can pull down a row that the rest of the section had already earned.

Give every criterion a heading, then read for the verb
Rows in this deliverable usually pair a measurement with an explanation, and the explanation is where the marks sit. Note which row is asking about the design, because that is the one most often answered by accident.

Name the design before the statistic
Say whether the data were observed, surveyed, or produced by assignment, and how the students or cases entered the set. The design decides which verbs are available to you for the rest of the document.

Plot the two variables before you measure them
A scatterplot with labeled axes shows whether the relationship is roughly straight, whether a few points are driving it, and whether a coefficient means anything at all here. Measuring first and plotting later hides all three.

Report strength, direction, and count together
Give the coefficient, say what it means in ordinary words, and put the sample size beside it. Then say how much of the variation goes unexplained, since that figure keeps a moderate relationship in proportion.

Name a specific third variable
Not confounding in the abstract, but one nameable thing that could plausibly move both quantities, chosen from the situation the data came from. This sentence is usually the whole difference between the top two columns.

Say what would settle it, then self-score
Describe the evidence that would separate the explanations, whether that is random assignment or a variable held constant. Then mark each row against the guide and submit with two business days in hand.

Across the 214 students who used the tutoring center at least once last term, sessions attended and final quiz average moved together with a correlation of 0.42, a moderate positive relationship that leaves roughly 82 percent of the variation in scores unaccounted for.1 These data were observed rather than assigned, since students chose how often to attend, so the defensible verb is that attendance was associated with higher scores and not that it produced them.2 Paid work hours is the most plausible third variable here: a student working fifteen fewer hours a week has more room both to attend sessions and to study alone, which would raise both quantities without either one causing the other, and only a design that assigned attendance or held work hours constant could separate the two explanations.3

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished
- A causal verb on observed data. Caused, improved, and led to are unavailable when nobody assigned anything, and the verb is checked before the arithmetic.
- The correlation slogan with no candidate named. Repeating that correlation is not causation is a definition; the row wants one specific alternative explanation.
- A coefficient with no plot behind it. Without the scatterplot nobody can tell whether the relationship is straight or driven by three unusual cases.
- The unexplained variation left out. A moderate coefficient reads as strong until the share it fails to account for is stated.
- No account of how cases entered the set. A relationship measured among volunteers describes volunteers, and saying so is part of the answer.
