Description is graded as coverage, so build a fixed list and work it every time: domain, intercepts, vertical asymptotes, horizontal or slant behavior, removable discontinuities, intervals of increase and decrease, end behavior. A response missing one item has answered part of the question rather than answered it wrongly, and the row cannot tell the difference.

  1. Turn each criterion into a heading first

    Read the guide before the function. A row asking you to analyze behavior wants the whole list whether or not the prompt spells it out, so put the list under the heading and fill it in rather than writing prose and hoping.

  2. Derive the domain before you draw anything

    Set every denominator to zero, check every radicand, and check what the situation itself forbids. Then state the domain in words and in interval notation. A figure produced before the domain is known usually shows a curve through a point the function does not have.

  3. Factor, then say what the factoring did

    Cancelling a shared factor removes a point from the domain and leaves a hole behind, and the hole belongs in your description at its height. Simplification that quietly deletes a feature is the most expensive habit in this deliverable.

  4. Locate each feature and give it coordinates

    An asymptote is a line, so name the equation of it. A hole is a point, so give both coordinates. An intercept is a point too. Vague location costs the same as a missing feature, since neither can be checked.

  5. Test the description instead of substituting a root

    Verification here means evaluating on each side of a vertical asymptote and confirming the sign matches the behavior you claimed, then evaluating either side of a hole to show the values closing on the height you named.

  6. Read the behavior back into the situation

    Where the function models something, say what its asymptote or its end behavior means in that context, in units. Then self-score every row against the guide and submit early, allowing two business days for evaluation.

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished

  • A cancelled factor left unmentioned. Simplifying away a shared factor removes a point from the domain, and the hole belongs in the description at its height.
  • Asymptotes described instead of located. A line has an equation, and a row asking where a feature sits cannot credit a paragraph that only says it exists.
  • A graph pasted in with no paragraph. If the figure reproduces poorly the description is all that survives, so the words have to carry the whole answer.
  • The domain declared rather than derived. Stating an interval with no reason attached leaves the row that asked for the reasoning empty.
  • A feature list stopped early. An answer with the asymptotes and no end behavior is incomplete rather than wrong, and it scores as incomplete.
