The few physical items ship from the Capella University Bookstore. So the real question is usually not where to buy a book, it is how the Resource Kit works and when you would ever step outside it.
Start with the Resource Kit
The Resource Kit is Capella's course-materials program, and it is opt-out rather than opt-in for most students. It bundles the required textbooks, ebooks, library resources, any test kits, course media, and tools for your courses into one package billed at a flat rate per academic term. The point of it is that you are never hunting an ISBN the night before an assessment is due: when your course opens, the materials it needs are already attached. For a working adult juggling a job and a program, that convenience is most of the value.
Where the ebooks actually live
Capella's approach to materials is digital first. About 96 percent of course materials are provided as ebooks, and you reach them through links inside your courseroom rather than a separate store. The ebooks are delivered by VitalSource, Capella's digital textbook partner, and once they are in your VitalSource shelf they do not expire, so a source you used in an early course is still there when a later assessment sends you back to it. You can read them in the browser or in the VitalSource Bookshelf app, highlight, and search the full text, which is a real advantage when a scoring guide wants a specific idea cited quickly.
When you actually need a physical book
Some courses still assign a print item, a workbook, a kit, or a text that is not offered digitally. Those come from the Capella University Bookstore, which also tracks your order history and shipments and holds any digital access codes. If you have chosen to opt out of the Resource Kit for a term, the bookstore is where you source the required materials yourself. In practice, nursing and a few specialized courses are the ones most likely to send you to a physical item; most general and business courses stay entirely digital.

Because the fee is flat per term rather than per book, the kit rewards the same thing FlexPath rewards: pace. Finish more courses in a term and the per-course cost of your materials falls, since one kit fee covers everything you open that term.
Tips students tend to learn a term too late
- Check the kit against the syllabus in week one. Confirm the materials your course lists are actually in your shelf before an assessment needs them.
- Your ebooks do not expire. A source from an early course is still searchable later, which saves you re-finding evidence for a capstone.
- Decide on opting out early. If you already own a required text, the opt-out has a deadline; weigh the kit's convenience against the cost before the term locks.
- Use full-text search for citations. When a criterion wants a specific concept, searching the VitalSource text beats flipping pages under a deadline.
