Capella tuition, scholarships, and the real ways to pay less

The short answer

Capella prices the two formats differently: GuidedPath bills per credit, FlexPath bills a flat rate per 12-week session no matter how much you finish. That difference is why the biggest tuition lever at Capella is not a scholarship, it is pace on FlexPath, followed by transfer credit and Credit for Prior Learning, which are priced at a fraction of tuition. Scholarships and promotional offers exist and rotate through the year, so treat them as a bonus you check for at enrollment, not the plan.

Ranges exist because programs price differently inside each level. Your program page and enrollment counselor give the exact figure; the ranges above are Capella's published spread and they are what every calculation on this site uses.

The Tuition Cap

On select programs Capella caps total tuition, most visibly the DNP, marketed with a cap under $32,000. A cap changes the math for slower students: however many sessions the doctorate takes, the tuition total stops climbing at the cap. It does not make pace worthless, because on our expedite plan a three-session DNP bills roughly $10,200-$10,440 at published rates, far under the cap, and finishes years earlier. Check your program page for whether a cap applies to you.

The four levers that actually cut what you pay

  1. Pace, if you are on FlexPath

Flat-rate sessions mean every extra course you finish per session is tuition you never pay. This lever is worth more than every other item on this page combined, which is why the expedite plan exists.

  2. Transfer credit

Credits you bring are catalog you do not buy. Bachelor's programs accept substantial transfer credit, and the 4.5-credit entry floor means Capella expects you to bring some. Get the official evaluation before you enroll.

  3. Credit for Prior Learning

Documented work experience, certifications, and training can convert to credit at $75 per undergraduate credit or $125 per graduate credit, a fraction of any tuition rate on this page. Working nurses and managers routinely leave real money here unclaimed.

  4. Employer tuition assistance

Health systems and large employers commonly fund degrees like the RN-to-BSN and MSN. HR knows before the internet does; ask about annual caps and whether Capella is already a listed partner.

Scholarships and promotional offers

Capella runs scholarships and enrollment offers that rotate through the year, and online universities change these frequently enough that any specific figure printed here would go stale. The honest guidance: check Capella's tuition and financial aid pages for the current offers the week you apply, ask your enrollment counselor what is active, and stack whatever you qualify for on top of the levers above. One caution from the aid rules that does not rotate: federal-aid students on FlexPath must engage a unique course each session and maintain minimum program points, which matters if you plan an aggressive pace on aid.

A worked example: the RN-to-BSN, three ways

Take the bachelor's FlexPath range of $2,575-$3,530 per session. A typical one-course-at-a-time pace running about two years touches eight or more sessions: $20,600-$28,240. Capella's own fastest-quartile marketing cites under 9 months and under $11,000. The expedite plan clears the same catalog in one session: $2,575-$3,530, plus whatever transfer credit already removed from the catalog before you started. Same degree, same school, published rates throughout; the difference is entirely pace and preparation.
