Capella admissions: requirements, timeline, and the whole process

The short answer

Capella admissions is deliberately low-friction: no application fee, no GRE, GMAT, SAT, or ACT, and a decision typically within two weeks. Bachelor's applicants need a high school diploma or equivalent plus a small amount of transferable credit; master's and doctoral applicants need the prior accredited degree with a 3.0 GPA. The one extra gate is FlexPath, which recommends a 2.8 GPA and, for bachelor's programs, 45 applicable credits. The process is an online application plus transcripts, and the real decisions worth thinking hard about are your format and your transfer credits, both of which change what the degree costs.

Requirements by level

Bachelor's. A high school diploma or equivalent, photo ID, and a minimum of 4.5 quarter credits of transferable college credit. That last item surprises people: Capella's bachelor's programs are completion-oriented, so a small amount of prior credit is the entry floor, and a large amount is the discount lever.

Master's. A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA. Below a 3.0, talk to admissions anyway; conditional routes exist program by program, and the worst case is a plan to qualify.

Doctoral. A master's degree from an accredited institution with a 3.0 GPA. Clinical and licensure-track programs layer their own requirements on top, so read your specific program page closely.

The FlexPath gate, because it changes your tuition

FlexPath is not automatic. Capella recommends a 2.8 GPA minimum for FlexPath admission, and bachelor's FlexPath additionally expects about 45 applicable credits, roughly the second half of a degree. The gate matters because FlexPath's flat-rate sessions are the cheapest way through Capella for a paced student: our expedite page shows the same programs costing thousands less at FlexPath speed. If you sit near the gate, getting over it is usually worth more than any scholarship you will find.

The process, step by step

  1. Pick program and format first

Format is the biggest financial decision in the whole process. GuidedPath bills per credit on a fixed weekly clock; FlexPath bills flat per session and rewards pace. Eligible programs list both options.

  2. Submit the free online application

Basic history and program choice. There is no essay wall and no fee, so applying costs you nothing but the transcript request.

  3. Send transcripts and ID

Official transcripts from prior institutions, high school or college as your level requires, plus photo identification.

  4. Get your transfer and CPL evaluation

Ask for the credit evaluation before you enroll, not after. Transfer credit plus Credit for Prior Learning is priced far below tuition and shortens the catalog you will actually pay to complete.

  5. Decision, enrollment, orientation

Decisions typically land within two weeks. From there you pick a start, complete orientation, and meet your first courseroom.

Start dates and the calendar

GuidedPath runs on 10-week quarters with several starts across the year. FlexPath runs rolling 12-week billing sessions, so entry points come around frequently rather than twice a year. Treat the exact next-start date as a live question for admissions or the current catalog at capella.smartcatalogiq.com, because calendars shift; what stays constant is that you are never far from a start at Capella.

After you're in: the part nobody plans for

Admissions is the easy half. The load that actually decides your timeline starts in week one: scoring guides on FlexPath, Thursday and Sunday deadlines on GuidedPath, and practicum hours in clinical programs. That is our half of the work. From the first assessment to the capstone, the team keeps every deliverable moving in 24 to 48 hours, and the expedite plan turns FlexPath's billing model into real savings.
