The biggest savings at Capella are decided before your first assessment, not during it. Applying is free, with no application fee and no entrance exam, so the cost conversation starts at zero. From there the levers that move real money are transfer credit and Credit for Prior Learning, no-cost general education through Sophia on eligible bachelor's degrees, employer and military tuition assistance, and Capella's own non-need-based scholarships and tuition caps. Stack them in the right order and you can remove thousands of dollars of catalog before you ever pay a session.
The free part, taken first
Capella charges no application fee and requires no GRE, GMAT, SAT, or ACT at any level, so the act of applying costs you nothing but a transcript request. That matters for cost planning because it means you can apply, get your evaluations back, and see your real remaining catalog before committing a dollar. Undergraduate applicants also open Sophia membership at that point, which opens the single largest pre-enrollment saving on the list below. In other words, applying early is itself a cost-saving move, not a commitment.
Bring credit instead of buying it
Every credit you bring is a credit Capella never charges you to take, and the discount is steep because credit sources are priced far below tuition.
| Source | What it does | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer credit | Bachelor's programs accept up to 135 of the 180 quarter credits from regionally accredited schools and approved exams. | Limited by program; get the evaluation before enrolling. |
| Sophia (undergrad) | No-cost general education on select bachelor's degrees, an average saving of about $8,000. | Undergraduate general education only; confirm each course applies. |
| Credit for Prior Learning | Certifications and experience convert to credit; undergraduate assessments run about $75 per credit. | A small per-quarter documentation fee applies; petitions take effort. |
| National exams | AP, IB, CLEP, and DSST results transfer where they apply. | Must match a degree requirement to count. |
The evaluation itself is the step people skip, and it is free and fast: once your transcripts arrive, Capella returns transfer evaluations within about seven business days. Ask for it before you enroll, because a course you never have to pay to take is worth more than any percentage-off offer you will find.
Scholarships and caps, timed to enrollment
Capella runs non-need-based Capella Progress Reward scholarships for eligible new and returning students and alumni, and it caps total tuition on select programs, most visibly a $32,000 maximum on the DNP and a $12,000 cap on the MS in Education, with books and fees outside the cap. These rotate and carry eligibility windows, so the honest guidance is to treat them as an enrollment-week question: ask your counselor which scholarships and caps are active the week you apply, confirm the qualifying dates, and stack whatever you qualify for on top of the credit levers above rather than instead of them.
Employer and military money, asked for early
More than a thousand organizations partner with Capella on tuition assistance, and health systems in particular routinely fund the RN-to-BSN and MSN. Your HR department usually knows the terms before any website does, so the move is to ask about annual caps, whether Capella is already a listed partner, and how reimbursement timing works before you pick a start date. Military service members and veterans have a dedicated benefits program on top of this. None of these require you to be a strong writer or a fast finisher; they only require asking before you enroll, when the paperwork can still shape your plan.
The order that saves the most
Apply free and get your evaluations
No fee, no exam. Applying opens your transfer evaluation and, for undergraduates, Sophia.
Clear general education cheaply
Undergraduates fill general education through no-cost Sophia before enrolling, removing the largest low-value block.
Evaluate transfer and prior learning
Get the seven-day evaluation and file any Credit for Prior Learning petitions, so you only enroll into the catalog you actually still need.
Layer aid, scholarships, and employer funds
Ask what is active at enrollment and confirm employer or military benefits, then pick a start date that fits their timing.
Where a tutor fits after the savings are locked
Every lever above shrinks the catalog; none of them writes the assessments that remain, and on FlexPath the pace of those assessments is its own large saving. That is our half. Once your plan is set, a tutor returns a premium original sample for the assessment in front of you in 24 to 48 hours, so the remaining catalog moves at the speed the billing model rewards. The pace-equals-money argument is laid out fully on the expedite plan page.
Plan locked, ready to move?
Send your first assessment and its scoring guide. We return a Distinguished-mapped premium sample free so the catalog you kept moves fast.
