This manual is for BUS-FPX4014 Assessment 1, start to submission. Assessment 1 of BUS-FPX4014, Operations Management for Competitive Advantage, is the process deliverable: you map how work actually moves, find the step that governs output, prove it arithmetically, and propose a change whose effect you can predict in numbers. This is the part of a business degree with right answers in it, and the criteria take advantage of that. How BUS-FPX4014 Assessment 1 is scored
FlexPath issues no letter grades at all. Each criterion lands at one of four levels, and the level wording is the brief you write to:

Pick one unit before you write a sentence and never change it. Units per hour, minutes per unit, orders per shift and cases per day are all defensible, and mixing two of them inside one paper is the most reliable way to make a correct analysis unreadable. A reader who cannot follow the calculation cannot award the criterion.

Turn the criteria into headings and fix your unit
Outline from the guide, then write your chosen unit at the top of the document and hold it everywhere, including in the tables. If the case gives you seconds per unit and you want units per hour, convert once, state the conversion, and work in the new unit from then on.

Map the process that happens, not the one on the wall
Record the real sequence with durations, queues and rework loops. The gap between the documented process and the practised one is usually where the problem lives. Classify each step as adding something a customer would pay for, enabling the work, or waiting, and put a time against every one.

Prove the constraint with rates
Four stations at 26, 61, 44 and 39 seconds a unit means the line runs at 61 seconds because the second station governs, which is 3,600 divided by 61, or 59 units an hour, and about 413 over a seven-hour productive shift. Station one idles 35 seconds in every cycle. That arithmetic tells you something no paragraph can, which is that a faster machine at station one would add nothing at all.

Use effective capacity, never the rating on the plate
A machine rated at 500 units an hour that runs 78 percent of the time once changeovers, breakdowns and breaks are counted delivers 390. Every downstream figure inherits whichever number you choose, so state the availability you assumed and where it came from. Nameplate capacity is the single most common source of an internally inconsistent operations paper.

Test the change before you recommend it
Move nine seconds of work off the governing station and the line runs at 52 seconds a unit, which is 69 units an hour and roughly 484 a shift, a gain of about 17 percent for the cost of rebalancing rather than the cost of equipment. Show the arithmetic for the after case as well as the before, because a recommendation with no predicted effect is a suggestion.

Name the next constraint, then self-score
Relieving one limit always exposes another, so say which step governs once yours is fixed, and at what output. Then attach the measures that will confirm the change and the person who reads them, mark your own draft against each criterion, and rewrite anything short of the top level before submitting early in the week.

Marchetti Press finishes wedding stationery through four stations, and timed over thirty consecutive card sets they run at 26, 61, 44 and 39 seconds a set for proofing, press, foiling and trim and pack.1 The line therefore runs at 61 seconds a set because the press governs, which is 3,600 divided by 61, or 59 sets an hour, and 413 sets across a seven-hour productive shift once the two fifteen-minute breaks and the twenty-minute changeover are removed from the eight-hour day.2 Proofing idles 35 seconds in every cycle and trim and pack idles 22, so the two operators either side of the press are together standing still for the equivalent of ninety-five minutes a shift.3

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished
- A bottleneck asserted instead of calculated. Naming the slowest step without the rates behind it leaves every recommendation downstream unsupported.
- Nameplate capacity used as real capacity. Rated output ignores changeovers, downtime and breaks, and the error propagates into every figure that follows.
- Units switched mid-paper. Moving between minutes per unit and units per hour without a stated conversion makes the analysis impossible to check.
- No predicted after case. A recommendation with no quantified effect cannot satisfy a criterion asking what the change will achieve.
- The next constraint ignored. Relieving one limit always exposes another, and a paper that stops at the first gain has answered half the question.
