How BIO-FPX1000 Assessment 1 is scored

No FlexPath result carries a letter grade. Each criterion lands on one of four levels, and the wording of those levels is the writing brief:

A survey course is built for people who will not become biologists, and the criteria are written from that fact. Nothing here rewards sounding like a textbook. What the columns pay for is a process a reader can follow, quantities a reader can check, and honesty about where the explanation runs out.

The BIO-FPX1000 Assessment 1 method, step by step

  1. Read the criteria for the second verb

    Science rows here pair a knowledge verb with a communication verb: describe and explain, identify and relate. The marks sit in the second one, and drafts deliver the first at length and the second in a closing line. Make each criterion a heading and answer its second verb first.

  2. Fix the audience before the content

    Most prompts name a reader: a patient, a relative, a coworker with no science behind them. Register is scored against that person, so write the audience into your opening paragraph. The same physiology pitched at a clinician is not a better answer, it is an answer to a different question.

  3. Pick a loop you can actually close

    A feedback loop has four parts, a variable with a set point, a sensor, a control center that compares the reading, and an effector that pushes back. Choose a system where your sources let you name all four. A paragraph that names a sensor and stops has described half a mechanism, and half a mechanism reads as Basic.

  4. Attach a unit, a population and a range to every number

    A figure with no unit has lost its meaning, and a reference interval with no population attached has lost its authority. Write the quantity, its unit, the group the range belongs to, and the normal window beside it. Adult intervals read onto a child cost a criterion that was otherwise scoring well.

  5. Draft the process in order, then check each step

    Write the mechanism in your own sentences with the source closed, then reopen it and verify each step. Any step that will not come out in plain words is the one the evaluator will land on. Keep the citation inside the working sentence rather than stapled after the period.

  6. Self-score, then read it to a non-specialist

    Mark every criterion D, P, B or N yourself and give anything below D another pass. Then read your explanatory paragraph aloud to somebody with no clinical background and watch where they stop following. Submit early in the week, since faculty have two business days on an attempt.

Core temperature is the variable your body defends hardest during a long run, and it defends it with water.1 Sensors in the hypothalamus read the temperature of blood arriving from the core, compare it against a set point close to 37 degrees Celsius, and signal the skin arterioles to widen and the sweat glands to open, which carries heat to the surface and then off it as sweat evaporates.2 On a humid morning the last step is the one that fails, because air already near saturation accepts very little more water, so sweat runs off the skin without evaporating and the loop loses the only exit heat had; that is why 10 kilometers at 24 degrees Celsius with 85 percent relative humidity is harder work than the same distance at 30 degrees with 20 percent, and why the answer is a slower pace rather than more effort.3

  • 1Names the variable and what defends it in one sentence, with no definitions and no throat-clearing about the human body. The reader has the subject before any anatomy arrives.
  • 2Runs all four parts of the loop in order and states the direction heat travels. A list of organs cannot do this, which is why the list scores lower.
  • 3Identifies the step that fails, gives two conditions with units so the comparison can be checked, and lands on an action. Naming the failing part separates the top two columns.

The five mistakes that cost Distinguished

  • A loop left open. A sensor named and no effector describes half a process and stops exactly where the criterion begins.
  • Terminology spent on decoration. If a paragraph defines three terms and reuses one, two were ornament and the reader paid for all three.
  • A range quoted with no population. A reference interval belongs to a group, and an adult window read onto a child is a different claim than the one you cited.
  • The audience switched partway through. A handout that opens in plain words and closes in journal register has failed the row that named the reader.
  • A textbook sentence carried across intact. A definition you cannot restate in your own words is one you do not hold, and an evaluator hears the seam.
